Tech Week Gibberish...

I'm in tech week.
It's called hell week.  This is an actual professional term.  Ask any person in the biz.  I am exhausted and can only muster bullet points.  Here we go.

  • I'm totally freaking out.
  • I honestly think the acting in this production is spot on.  Dave has been happy and pleasantly surprised by the level we have brought.  Whatever happens logistically -  the acting is totally solid.
  • I haven't been able to eat normally for 2 weeks and have been in a constant battle with my stomach.
  • I've had moments when the emotions brought up in my performance almost got away from me.  This is rad.
  • It scares me that the communication between us and Casa is very vague and keeps changing.
  • I'm totally freaking out.
  •  The death scene at the end of the show is really fucking cool especially now with the rose petals they're using for blood.  I'm super jealous I'm already dead and can't be in this scene.
  • I realized I have the smallest part in the play yet probably have the most people coming to see it.
  • I'm totally freaking out.
  • My simple statements in our carpool seem to keep sparking heavy/deep/or serious conversations when I'm always just making a simple statement.  I find this amusing.
  • I keep thinking I have my nerves under control then a friend texts or emails me to tell me they're coming to the show and I want to vomit.
  • My suicide scene is now really beautifully lit and darkish so the arm wounds don't have to be super perfect.  And I'm using a real straight razor which has everyone nervous.
  • I'm terrified by the fact that we're supposed to just run our scenes multiple times (6 in act 1 and 5 in act 2) on our own, pausing for 2 minutes then doing it again.  And we've never done this yet.  It's Wednesday.
  • I also think it's weird we have to ring a bell at the end of each scene to signify the end.  I am going to be curled up under a sink dying after an emotional scene then have to ring a fucking bell.
  • I looooooooooooooooooooove when the Shamlets and Hamlet are 1st introduced.  It's such a rad creepy physical scene.
  • Gertrude has the raddest dresses.
  • Even though I'm disappointed my suicide scene has changed dramatically with no blood, probably no bath water I am very pleased I don't have to be wet anymore.  It's not a warm location.
  • I hope to hell I don't forget my lines.
  • My thigh is still sore from when I accidentally did the splits 2 nights ago.
  • I'm totally freaking out.
  • My mad scene is my favorite scene.
  • This is the most gorgeous place I have ever done a show.
  • I'm doing my best to let go of the fact that this is just not going to be a normal show but a total new experience for the audience and actors and everyone will enjoy themselves no matter what happens.  This is why I do it.
Godammit I love theatre.

Also here's a rad article!

Time...

Time is valuable.  Hell time is precious.

The way I look at life now has completely changed and one of the few things that upsets me now is if you waste my time.

Some people have told me I do too much.  I pack my social calendar.  I’m always going.  This is and isn’t true.  Yes, I do pack a bunch of stuff into my life, but do I ever regret it?  Nope.  Do I still make time to relax and not do a damn thing sometimes?  Yes I do!  Some don’t believe that, but I do.  I will make time to just veg.  To nap.  Sometimes to just zone out to a silly TV show.  Really I do!

When I was in recovery, my dad was grasping for any sort of anything that may have caused my hemorrhage.  Many of us were.  It’s hard to accept something is “just a fluke”.  On one of his many visits he said “You know, you always do so much.  Maybe you should slow down.  Maybe that's why this happened?”  I smiled and said “No.  Dad, if I hadn’t had survived, I wouldn’t have one single regret of all that I’ve crammed into my 36 years (now 39) on this earth.  Think about it.”  He nodded understanding my point but still wanting me to slow down at least a little.

I used to think working in my weirdly specialized job was such a waste of time.  I’m never going to make a lot of money.  I’m never going to move up.  I came here to Chapman and I see fellow employees killing themselves getting their masters (now some people love school so not knocking those folks!).  Moving up.  Leaving here to get bigger and better jobs.  I used to feel like a failure.  I tried to go back to school here and failed so hard at the math courses it caused me to be sick.  Then it hit me – this isn’t important to me!  These people that are moving on and up and killing themselves will live their whole life like that.  I see some people at work that work 14-15 hour days and have a family.  They are strung out, overworked, unhappy.  I will never be that.  And I’m glad.  This job I’m in allows me to have the time to fill my calendar with workouts, time with friends, meditation, time to blog/write and not feel like I’m going to explode!  I don’t mind the M-Fri 8-5 hours.  I don’t mind that I’ll never make a whole bunch of money.  I don’t mind that I won’t be running a staff of 100.  I don’t mind that I don’t have a master’s degree in something.  I have a very understanding boss who trusts me to get my work done so I get more leeway on when I leave or take time off.  My job is only mild on the stress level.  I may not make a ton, but I’m able to pay my bills and keep a roof over my head.  It’s fine.  It’s nothing special.  And that’s ok!

I’m currently in a show that’s scaring the crap out of me.  It is bringing a level of stress I haven’t had in a while.  But I’m also loving every second of it because this is something I love.  I’ll never do back to back to back shows like I used to years ago, just to do something.  I will pick and choose a show I feel passionate about and throwing myself and my energy into a project will not be wasted time.   We’re about to roll into “Hell Week” which is going to be brutal, but it’s only a week and it will be worth every second when that show goes up.  I can’t explain it but when a group of passionate artists are thrown together to put up a project like this, we become a family.  Maybe a slightly dysfunctional family but still a family.  We all share the same fear, and anxiety, and excitement, and passion to put on a show that’s a brand new experience for all involved.  I’m exhausted, scared, anxious, frustrated and yes – loving every second.

Once the show is up, my calendar will fill back up with social engagements, work outs and adventures.  I live in the moment more.  I worry about the future less.  I dwell on the past almost never.  I know I will continue to do so and get even better at living in the moment.   Those moments I share with family and friends are precious to me.  Those moments I spend on bettering myself physically, spiritually and emotionally are precious to me.

This can all be taken away in the blink of an eye.  My friend Rose wrote a lovely blog that sort of kicked me into gear writing this one.  I've been thinking about this a lot lately.   If you want some inspirational journeys.  Check them out Eternal Recess.

It’s a hard fact.  We don’t have forever.  None of us do.  And you don’t know when your time is up.  2 people this week had lives cut short.  Suddenly.  Both had families and children.  One of them was a sibling to a dear friend of mine and when he told me she went to bed with a headache and never woke up I crumbled.  My survivor’s guilt rose back up again.  Why did I survive and she didn’t?  She has children.  She took care of her mother.  I cried for her.  I cried for my friend who lost a sister he adored.  Then I find out another friend of my brothers passed suddenly.  I had met him a few times.  Wonderful guy.  He had children.  They’ve lost a father and they’re so young!  Then there's my Papa.  I'm still dealing with that.  I would give anything to hug him one more time.  Losing him was like losing a limb.  I dream about him sometimes and I'll wake up sobbing because it felt so real.  I felt his burly arms around me, squeezing me.  I heard his chuckle and saw that twinkle in his eye.  I miss him every day.  But the hard fact is – that’s life.  We don’t get to choose who stays and who goes.  All we can do is live the one we have the best way we know how.

I’m glad I work in a low stress job that pays crap.  I’m glad I can throw myself into a project that I’m excited about.  I’m glad I have a packed social calendar.  I’m glad I make time for my family.  My gramma thanks me all the time for taking the time out to take her to the cemetery once a week but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  It's our time together.  It's special.  I’m glad I’ve become more emotional.  Hell it’s helping my acting!  But I also couldn’t imagine not being filled with compassion every day.  It may be painful but that makes you alive.  Feelings.  Emotions.  That’s living.  It’s ok to have ups and downs.  It makes us human.

I’m grateful for every second of every day.  Breathe it in my friends.  I know you're always told to hug your loved ones tighter.  Cherish moments.  Etc. Etc.  But godammit do it!  Don’t ever take life for granted.  I promise you – you won’t regret it.

More pictures of S&A...

Brenda is on a roll with all these photos.  I'm loving it!  I also included a few I took that I purposefully used no filter because Casa Romantica is just that beautiful!

We're pluggin along.  Dave is starting to tweak scenes a bit more now that everyone is off book.  The dance (as much as I despise it) is actually quite cute and funny and will be a fun way to start the show.  Jeffrey is really coming into his character, it's so great to watch.  Bryan has found some levels that are wonderful and the Shadow Hamlets are really falling into a great creepy dance with Jeffrey that's going to be so cool!  Dave is super happy with my mad scene and suicide scene which pleases me to no end.  But I will say this - working it full emotion a couple of times on Monday was tough.  It's going to take a lot out of me to do that six times!  Plus starting that off with the mad scene.  Brenda and my scene is getting some more fire too.  She's only getting better.  I'm going to be quite emotionally exhausted after this one, that's for sure.  But damn will it be worth every second!  Enjoy the pictures!

I was prepping for my mad scene - didn't even realize Brenda took this and I love it!

And I'm actually popping into this blog a few days later to post the crap load of pictures Brenda took last night!  I want to make sure I capture all the shots so I have them!  It was a long late night and we were able to watch each others 1st act room scenes which was rad.  Jeffrey and Jill were fantastic in their scene!  So rad and disturbing.  Rick's monologue is hilarious as well!!!  I sure hope we get a chance to see the 2nd act scenes as well.  Oh and funny side note - we used the gun last night and I think someone called the police!!  Oops!!

A moment of sadness...

I had it last night.

As you readers know, we're putting on a show at the beautiful Casa Romantica.  As you also probably know, this is where I got married in August of 1999.

When we had our 1st walk through back in October, a few friends in the cast asked me if I was ok, knowing this was where I got married.  I laughed it off and said "Of course!  That was a lifetime ago!  The wedding was awesome, it's the marriage that was a sham.".  This is a true statement.  But I had a feeling that it would hit me at some point even though it was, in fact, a lifetime ago.

Why is this I wonder?  Why after almost 16 years does my failed marriage pop up and bite me sometimes?  I almost never think about him.  All I know is he's remarried and apparently really religious now.  I know he and his wife run a photography business.  And that's it.  That's all I know, and more than I even want to know.  I don't hate him anymore.  I don't even stress about the fact that I still (yes still) am paying off the last of his debt he left me in.  I don't relive the lies and the drugs and the awful bullshit that was indeed our marriage.  Sadly I don't remember the good times though.  But I do remember our wedding.  Maybe that's why it panged me last night.

Last night was the night.  I truly believe that'll be it.  That last night it tugged at my heartstrings but it won't again.  I guess it's ok to still get sad about this right?  I mean back then on that beautiful August day I thought I had found the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with.  That day I was happy.  That day I believed in love.

Last night rehearsal shifted and everyone was running the 2nd act room scenes.  This is when my death takes place in the bathroom where I once had a bridesmaid hold up my dress so I could pee.  This is also the same bathroom that the wedding coordinator would guard the door so I could sneak a cigarette out the window so my grandma wouldn't see.   Now I'll be cutting my wrists and singing the Beatles while I die.  Ironic?  Seriously.

I ran it by myself a couple of times and got a bit emotional.  I went outside and noticed no one else was finished so I wandered out into the back that overlooks the ocean and sat down, staring out over the ocean under the most beautiful moonlight.  I breathed in the salt air.  It was so beautiful.  So quiet.  Then I looked around the area where almost 16 years ago was filled with white chairs and an arch full of flowers.  A packed crowd cheering on as my soon to be husband and I exchanged our vows in a very simple, cute ceremony with twists of theatre jokes and smiles.  I remember the sun blinding me and my bridesmaids.  I remember my grandma wouldn't let me wear sunglasses.  I remember lots of laughter and my girls crying behind me.  Everyone was so happy.  I remember just before our kiss, his best man squirted mouth spray into his mouth as a little joke and we kissed and laughed.  I remember walking back down the aisle to The Best is Yet to Come by Frank Sinatra.

The memory faded with the cheers of the crowd and was replaced by the silence except for the crashing of the ocean.  I realized I was crying.  I got up and wandered around making sure I was still alone.  My heart ached.  I missed that happiness.  That glow.  That knowledge that I had a man in my life that I could share everything with.

As you know, I haven't really had much in the relationship world since then.  A smattering of fellows.  One that stayed around almost a year.  But that's it.  The loneliness took over and took my breath away.  It grabbed my heart and squeezed.

I heard voices coming from inside.  I wiped way the tears, took a deep breath and pulled myself together.  That's it.  That's all you get.  That one moment of sadness.

Rick and Jeff had finished their scene and they walked out breaking my moment.  I was glad.  We commented on the beauty of the place and enjoyed the the view.  We heard voices of others finishing up and headed back inside.  My moment of sadness was gone.

Mainly Rehearsal Pics...

I realized I missed a whole slew of pictures that Brenda took, so this is mostly just that.  Rad Brenda rehearsal photos.

I'm still recovering from the plague.  The strep has cleared up but this upper respiratory is hanging on for dear life.  Aside from some gnarly coughing fits yesterday I think I did ok.  I pretty much crashed out when I got home.  One of the Shadow Hamlets is also fighting a cold and our poor Hamlet was still in a pretty weakened state yesterday from his plague.  Ugh!  But the show must go on!

We had our all day rehearsal yesterday at the McCoy-Rigby studios and it went quite well.  We do apparently have some dance number we're doing in the beginning and oh lord...you should have seen that clusterfuck.  Only a couple of the cast members are actually good dancers so the rest of us were tripping over our own feet.  Bryan and I were smashing into each other the whole time.  Hilarious.

I love this picture.

Um...I'm confused.

Bryan was doing some weird Peanut Butter Jelly Dance.  Totally freaking me out yet hilarious.

The nunnery scene is finally and hopefully set.  I was really uncomfortable and just not getting Dave's vision for it.  But he explained that he wants it a little "off".  So - Brenda and I went at it.  She was super patient with me as I tried to put together some ideas.  When Dave came to watch it afterwards he was super happy with it.  Yay!!!!  It's still a bit weird to me, but if it works I'll work with it.

When we ran the mad scene Dave gave me a thumbs up.  That made my heart glow.  I've really been trying to come up with levels in that one.  I can't wait to work it more on site.  There's so much more room!!

Here's my little collage from yesterdays rehearsal:

It really is starting to come together!!  Jeremy and Alex are coming up with some really great bits as Rosencrans and Gildensteren.  And the Shadow Hamlets along with Jeffrey's physicality are making for some really rad creepy scenes!  I can't wait to see it grow and grow from here!  I love when you start to see a show shape up!!!!

Brenda just posted a bunch from Sunday as well!  Check em out below!!
