Mentors and people who inspire...

I’m participating in a couple of different meditation challenges right now and one of them is based on Gratitude.  This morning’s meditation focused on Mentors.  As I meditated I found the people who I consider mentors floating through my mind but also the people who inspire me.  The difference, for me, between mentors and people who inspire is mentors are almost like teachers.  They are the ones that have taught you certain things, certain aspects of life etc.  People who inspire are just that – I look at their lives and they are an inspiration.  I wanted to touch on those who have touched my life in those two ways in this blog.

It seems obvious to say my parents are mentors but it’s true.  My mom has mostly taught me about compassion and imagination.  One of my favorite memories was she would have us lay down outside on the grass and look at the clouds and tell her what shapes we saw.  The clouds would come alive as animals, people, shapes and stories.  Shane and I would create stories together as the clouds shifted into different things.  She also always encouraged us to see the beauty in nature.  “Look how beautiful the trees are!” she’d yell excitedly as we drove through the Redwoods one time.  She’s always been so patient and kind to others and I feel it’s finally rubbed off on me after all these years.  People would say she could walk into a chaotic crowded subway and everyone would suddenly feel calm.  I have noticed people lately have wanted me around because I calm them, or keep situations light, or make them laugh.  I attribute this right back to my mother.

My dad on the other hand has taught me how to be strong.  Ambitious.  Assertive.  I remember when I played softball, after practice for 2 hours he would pick me up and take me to the batting cages for another hour or so, or hit me balls.  When I played tennis I had my practice and afterwards practice with him.  He often assisted coaching a lot of my sports.  The other teammates would groan when dad would show up because he would kick our ass.  Weakness was not accepted.  I had a problem with this for years and thought it had hardened me.   I never felt like I was good enough.  It took me growing up into the person I am now to realize he was teaching me how to live.  I attack life with gusto and strength.  It takes a lot to bring me down.  I’m strong and I’m proud of it.  I’m a survivor and I’m proud of it.  I’ve turned my life around from partying, drinking, smoking, lack of sleep, eating like shit, not caring about myself to who I am today.  A healthy woman who prides herself on wellness.  I have a steady job.  I keep my passions a part of my life and don’t let anything get in my way.  I know this is because of how my dad raised me.

My friend Mic Nottingham is another person I like to refer to as a mentor.  He saw something in me that no one else saw when I was new to the stage.  I had dabbled a bit in high school but when I came to college I was clueless.  No one would cast me or give me a second glance.  But he did.  He took many chances on me and helped me get over my self-consciousness.  He taught me how to be a better actor.  To let myself go. To allow myself to become the character I was portraying.  His enthusiasm in me spread to others and more people started to have faith in me.  We always stayed good friends.  He now lives up north and I miss him tremendously but I know we’ll see each other again.  He paid me one of the sweetest compliments I ever received.  “You give me hope in humanity.” He told me once as we sat at the beach having one of our deep discussions we used to get into.  He was on a tangent and was saying he refuses to be friends with anyone who isn’t intelligent or political.  I laughed and asked why he was friends with me and that was his response.  He has always loved my heart and he sees it in my mom as well.  This means more to me now in my life than ever.

I’m finding I also look to my current boss Carol as a mentor.  She is one of the most intelligent passionate people I have met.  She’s very political, very opinionated and loves animals more than people.  I took this job 3 years ago and she has taught me so much already.  If I have a weakness (grammar mainly) she helps me.  Sends me to seminars.  Encourages me when I’m down and rewards me when I do well.  I would trust her with anything.  I watch how she deals with others around her and she has earned herself such a level of respect around here it’s amazing.  She knows her shit and she’s proud of her staff.  She should be, she brings the best out of all of us I believe.  When the time comes when we may not work side by side anymore I know we will stay in touch.  I have grown so fond of her and learned so much.

Now let’s move into those who have inspired me.  Let’s start with Mel.  I met Mel way back in the 1st days of The Hunger Artists.  She is a ridiculously talented artist and pulls no punches.  She knows what she wants and she does it.  The woman is the type of person that doesn’t just repaint her kitchen, she would remodel it.  Herself.  I jokingly refer to her as the female Bob Villa.  There were times when we were running HA together that she would say – let’s build an apartment complex onstage!  I’m standing there in our teeny tiny theater space shaking my head saying “There’s no way”.  But she’s running around like a spider monkey describing her idea.  She did it.  I couldn’t believe it.  Even the reviewers who came to the show raved about the amazing set.  A few shows down the line she was telling me an idea about a giant 10 foot Godzilla foot that will come down and smash an actor.  Again, I’m shaking my head.  A few weeks later I’m standing on a ladder painting the damn thing she created with chicken wire and paper Mache.  She sold her Harley (Yes she had one) and put a down payment on a house.  A big house!  In Costa Mesa!  She bought it back with the market was good and knows just how to manage her finances.  She’s an incredible nurse at Hoag (Yes a nurse!).  She is now married with a darling young boy I’m fascinated by watching how she raises him.  Meeting her you might be taken aback by her tactless sharp way about her but she has a heart of gold.  She loves the environment, animals, people, her friends and family so much.  She’s always been an inspiration.

I’ve also been inspired by another friend of mine by the name of Rose.  When we were closer and spent more time together I would listen in awe as she would ramble off these crazy ideas she had – then do them!  She told me stories of when she went sky diving!  Rock Climbing!  She was an incredible cook and I loved when she would call me up and have me come over and she would make us dinner and we’d drink and chat the night away.  Always the best meals I ever had.  She was so active and threw her entire being into everything she did.  She was crafty and gorgeous and athletic and multi-talented.  She inspired me to be more active.  To get up in the mornings (when I was living in Costa Mesa) before work and walk the beautiful back bay and watch the sunrise.  Whenever I would mention thinking about doing something – anything – she’d say go for it!  We drifted apart for a few years but have reconnected and now she owns her own food business that she opened with her husband.  I followed her blogs and stories and watched as she dove headfirst in to Triathlons, then upped and now she’s a friggin Ironman!  She’s also planning some crazy 50 mile summit run thing.  I’m blown away by each task she takes on.  She eventually made the scary move of quitting her full time well-paying job to focus solely on Bite Me Kitchen.  And now her and her hubs seem happier than ever.  She, just like Mel, is so multi-talented!  She’s always encouraging still when I’m thinking of trying something new.  Truly and inspiration.

My friend Rebecca is also an inspiration to me.  This girl used to work with me at the very colorful Opera Pacific back in the day.  I immediately adored her positive uplifting spirit.  She is much younger than me but I always teased her that she had an old soul.  She was super artistic and funky and immensely talented in the design world.  She is also a devout Christian.  Although I don’t fall into any religion myself I always admired her dedication.  She isn’t one of those scary crazy Christians, she was normal!  She is very liberal, supports gay rights, super compassionate.  She up and moved out to Denver Colorado and has made an incredible life for herself out there.  She just bought a condo and she’s so very happy.  We talked a lot about spirituality and life especially last year after everything I went through and she helped me to come to the path that I have chosen in life spiritually.  When I saw her when she was in town it was perfection.  As if she never left.  We are miles apart yes, but our friendship means so much.  She has always been an inspiration.

I’m so very lucky to have the quality of friends and family I have in my life.  I have a cousin up in Oregon I love so very much.  My grandparents mean the world to me.  A brother who takes care of me and helps me out with things only a man can do.  (He’s taking my truck into the shop tomorrow!).  My world is full of amazing friends, especially women!  I am surrounded by such a strong group of women it’s incredible.  I could touch on each and every one of them but this blog would go on for days.  In fact…I think I see a “Why I love my women friends” blog coming soon after this….

Mentors are important in our life I believe to help us on our path.  People who inspire us guide us in the direction our hearts want us to take.  Having the support of those who love you and will be there for you and bring you peanut butter crackers when you are hungry, and send you a loving text when they know you are down, and bring you lunches when you are recovering, and scold you like a mom because they care, and pay for things when they know you can’t afford them, and post something silly or cute just because they know you like it, who hug you when you need it, who kick your ass to work out when you don't want to, and are just there.  There in your life.  You can count on them.  It’s an amazing feeling knowing you are surrounded by such great people and I am so very lucky that I have so many.

Crafts, Wine and Dogs...

This is what my weekend consisted of!

Let's start with Crafts:

Friday night we had another craft night.  Jill was hosting and decided on making cards.  Her sister Lanie offered up her pad since Jill is living with her folks.  Holly was finally able to join us this time as was Mel!  We then had the usual suspects as you can see below.

As per usual we all brought stuff to make.  I brought Thanksgiving stuff and Xmas stuff.  I figured I'd make Thanksgiving cards for the fam.  I also made a get well card for a co-worker of mine.  We arrived with snacks, Lanie supplied the wine and we found out she was a secret scrapbooker!  She had everything!  Paper, stickers, a revolving thing with 24 different scissors that cut designs and more!  It was so awesome!  She also whipped out this nifty drink/trash thing that I had to photograph because I've never seen anything like it.  As Lanie said "Well you don't want your drink up with your crafts!"
Hilarious!

We laughed and made cards and learned that tacky glue isn't as good as Modge Podge but the Podge sort of warps your cards.  The hot glue gun worked well and I'm a huge fan of stickers.  All of the other girls are so much more talented at this sort of thing and made some fantabulous cards.

Mine were ok.  A few got messed up unfortunately.   We also learned they don't dry fast, so next time we need to be prepared to lay out cards in your car.  But here is my collection:

It was a super fun evening as it always is!  Holly brought these amazing cupcakes that D took a cute shot of me, Maryanne and Mel inhaling them over the sink!

Next up is Wine:

Saturday we had planned a ladies day trip and chose to go wine tasting.  It ended up only being four of us but it was a perfect four!  Katie, Robin and Lib all showed up at my house about 11am.  We did get a late start but we all had the whole day free so no worries.  We hopped on the freeway to of course promptly sit in traffic.  Lame.  We were getting pretty hungry and decided to stop at Tom's Farms for lunch!  I was thrilled since I had just been here after our Glen Ivy day.  I just love this place!  We wandered into the shop that has a deli and Lib wondered if they had wine tasting.  I guessed yes, as I remember a wine bar and sure enough a tasting was going on.  We headed over and as we approached I noticed a familiar face pouring the tastes.  I at first thought it may be someone I knew from high school.  As we stood at the end I noticed the wines he was pouring were said "Warrant" and they were rocker names.  "Could this be????....No".  I didn't want to assume because what the hell would the guitarist from Warrant be doing at Tom's Farms pouring wine?  As the girls were chatting with the folks about the wine I slyly googled Erik Turner.  HOLY SHIT IT WAS HIM!!!  I instantly turned to mush.  Robin leaned in and whispered "Is that..." YES I said!  So rad!!!!
I promptly started asking him about his wines and trying to act super cool.  I saw that he was signing bottles if you purchased one so I of course snatched up the Cab which was quite yummy!  The other girls all picked bottles as well once they realized who he was.  His wife popped up behind him and started telling us about her adventure at the Jelly Belly truck outside and we had to go out and spin the wheel.  They were so rad!  Lib asked if we could take a photo and he said "Sure!" he actually came out from behind the bar, put on his sunglasses and posed with us.  Then he had his son take a picture of us with his phone to put on his Facebook Page which of course I liked immediately.  He put his arm around me and I shivered with excitement!  Yes - I got totally star struck.  I mean I watched this guy perform!  He was one of the heavy metal hair bands I had hanging on my wall!!!!  He was the one that was the cutest in Warrant!!!  OH! MY! GOD!  I was dying.  I also want to point out how cool he was!  He had friends arrive to taste and he said hey to them, but he didn't take his attention away from us until we were leaving.  It was so very classy.  Talk about a random awesome occurrence!!!

After my heart stopped pounding we headed over, grabbed some lunch and sat outside where I used to love to eat.  We then hit up the Jelly Belly truck of course, I won some candy on the spin.

The girls purchased more candy and popcorn and headed out.  I can just imagine the sugar crash we're going to have.

We hit some sort of gnarly unexpected traffic but finally made it to Temecula.  Our 1st stop was South Coast Winery  - packed - we left.  Wiens was number two.  This is where I did my taste.  I had budgeted only one taste for me, plus I was driving.  I love Wiens!  We ended up with a fantastic chick and my favorites were The Sangiovese, Merrytage, a Reserve Primitivo and the best was the Reserve Zinfandel - AMAZING!  If I had any friggin money I so would have bought a case!  Next we hit Monte de Oro.  This place had an awesome floor that you could look down below and see the barrel room below!

The girls did tasting and Lib's sis Maria joined up with us!  Very cool.  After that we tried a couple more but they were packed and starting to close so we decided to head out since we were all getting hungry again.  So Claim Jumper dinner it was!  A really nice day and a really great time with the girls.  The highlight of course meeting Erik Turner!  I also must list my favorite quote of the day.  Me to Lib - "Why is your Woot Woot a Weet Weet?".  We laughed for days.

Lastly was the Dogs:

Fatima was signed up to do the Race for the Rescues 5K.  She had offered to pay for Amber and I do do the 1K walk with her and her dog Blue.  We would also pup sit Blue while she ran the 5K.  Totally!
The race was at OC Great Park and a really great event.  There were all kinds of rescue organizations, my favorite of course was the bulldog rescue, vendors, and some places had raffles!  I of course entered a few but didn't win anything.  Fatima killed the 5K.  She got 1st in her age group!

Amber and I chilled with Blue and I snapped a few shots:

Then we did the 1K walk.  It was so cute!  All these people just walking with their dogs.

I fell in love with Lilly who was walking near us:

After the walk we wandered around and visited.  Blue was of course a hit because of his size and many wanted to come pet and love on him.  I had so much fun loving on all of the dogs!!!  There were so many and everyone was super friendly and so willing to let me play/love on their dogs.  They did a little "Catwalk" like thing with dogs up for adoption.  Lord I wanted to take them all home!  So cute!!  I had a great time and loved seeing all the pups!  Since my rib is bruised (not fractured thank GAWD) this was a perfect thing for me to do!  A big thank you to Fatima for picking up my fee!  Love spending time with the gentle giant

It turned out to be a pretty great weekend!!

The first weekend of November...

I had a lovely weekend!

Mom and Keri were down at the San Clemente timeshare from the last week in October and ending the first weekend of November.  I was able to make it down there for one day - that being November 1st.  One of the things I do love about living in SoCal is we can have a beautiful warm sunny day like we did that day.  I could not have asked for more perfect weather!

I headed down about 9am to this gorgeous-ness:

I proceeded to do absolutely nothing.  I love it.  The only thing I usually do is grab lunch and/or happy hour at Fisherman's Wharf on the pier.  I always order oysters and/or a bucket of muscles and a glass of wine.  This year was no different.

As mom and I were on the balcony we noticed a bunch of pelicans diving and diving.  This went on for hours!  I have never seen anything like it!  We decided to walk down to the beach and check it out.  A man had swam up to see and they were coming up with huge fish in their mouths.  A school of fish must have been hanging out and these birds had hit the jackpot!  It was super cool to watch!  I attempted a video so you can see for yourself!

After we watched the birds we started walking along the surf.  I just love the ocean.  Mom and I collected a few smooth rocks because I've been thinking of painting them.  There were also super trippy lines in the sand from the water!  It was a beautiful perfect walk.

I headed home around 8pm.  As much as I wish I could have got to stay down there for a few days, I was so glad to get down for a beautiful Friday!

The next day was Noches de Altares in downtown Santa Ana.  I usually try to get to this every year.  This year I was able to get down there early to help T set up the altar at Bistro 400.  I especially wanted to be there because we were dedicating the main portion of the altar to our dear friend Stephen.  At the celebration of his life we held, people wrote little notes to him that we included in the altar.

I arrived just after noon and stood by and handed T whatever she needed.  This is her thing and I was there for help and moral support.  I also ended up being moral support for Robert as well!  Sometimes I think I've inherited my mom's calming nature and can help people out when they are a little strung out.  Makes me glad I can do something!  Anywhoo.  Altar got finished about 2 and it looked gorgeous.

The boys reserved us a table we had for part of the day and we proceeded to go ahead an Muertos ourselves up right there!

The Aztec dancers came by and blessed the altars with sage:

Katarina came by in the evening and lit the 1st candle of each altar.  Unfortunately she didn't get to ours but she looked awesome!

Sonja popped by and showed us her Peacock theme!

T lighting our altar!

T and I wandered around before dusk and checked out the vendors.  She bought an amazing piece and I got a couple of little figuerines I loved.  One is a little cat called Furry Bones.  It looks sort of like the Skelanimals.  I also got a Muertos Lucy and Desi dancing from I Love Lucy!  One more piece I couldn't resist was a Muertos cameo necklace.  So rad!
We then came back and chilled until some of T's friends/family arrived and we hit the altars.  It was really crowded by this point and we promptly got separated but I didn't mind.  Here are the shots I took.  I didn't take as many as I used to because I was finding myself engrossed in the altars instead.  They are truly so beautiful and intricate and detailed.  I know it's a day of celebration but I found myself crying and sad often.  It was tough this year, but so very beautiful and meaningful as always!

Afterwards we came back and had dinner at Bistro.  Around 9:30pm they start breaking it all down.  We lost track of time and when we saw the Bistro turning into a pretty rowdy after party we stepped to it and rapidly broke down our altar.  I got home about 1am exhausted but so glad I spent the whole day and night there this year.  It's such a beautiful event.  I'm sure plenty of spirits from the after life were partying with us in downtown Santa Ana Saturday night!
